The New Patient Examination

Most new adult patients will meet with Dr. Popp for a comprehensive dental examination. This time is set aside especially for you in Dr. Popp’s schedule.
During this comprehensive examination she will discuss with you your dental concerns and your wishes and expectations, and take the necessary records to provide a thorough diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan. This examination will include:

Oral cancer screening: Patients, who are tobacco, smokeless tobacco, or excessive alcohol users, are in primary danger of developing oral cancer.  In 2005 there were 19,100 oral cavity cancer cases reported. We are committed to the prevention of oral cancer through early identification of pre-cancerous conditions and utilize Vizilite screening technologies to provide oral cancer screenings at each preventive care appointment.  If you ever notice an oral lesion that lasts for more that 2 weeks do not wait to have it examined.

Periodontal exam: Periodontal disease or “gum disease” is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. Dr. Popp will examine you gum tissue to determine the health of you periodontal structures (gums and bone levels). Successful dental treatment depends on healthy gums. We take your periodontal health very seriously and will monitor it at all hygiene maintenance visits.

Caries exam: During this visual examination, Dr. Popp locates areas of decay on chewing surfaces and between the teeth. Dr. Popp uses both a clinical exam and x-ray (radiographic) findings to determine the most conservative treatment plan for you oral needs.

Diagnostic study models: Study models are stone replica casts of your teeth and jaws that are made from imprints of you teeth.  These models aid Dr. Popp in treatment planning by having a life size replica of your teeth.

Neuromuscular screening: This section of the examination pertains to your bite, abnormal tooth wear, your temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and the chewing muscles.  Abnormalities in these areas can cause facial pain, headaches, joint pain and noise and a variety of other related symptoms.  If problems are noted a more detailed evaluation may be needed to determine the full extent of the problem.

Digital photographic survey: Dr. Popp, will often take a series of digital photos to use for treatment planning and patient education.   Often the old saying, “a picture is worth 1000 words” applies to the dental photographic examination. High-resolution photos enable the doctor and patient see things more clearly.  Photos illustrate the presence of problems that the patient is not aware of or has no pain associated with.

Digital Dental X-rays: Dr. Popp uses digital dental X-Rays to provide even better dental care and more accurate diagnoses. The process of digitally capturing an image is much faster, safer and more comfortable for the patient. The digital dental X-ray system is more sensitive than dental X-ray film systems, so your exposure to X-rays is cut by as much as 90 percent. The large, color-enhanced images let you see what your dentist sees, so it's easier for you to understand how your dentist will treat your teeth. Your fees don't include payment for photo chemicals, film, processing or film storage. Used photo chemicals and film are not polluting the environment. Your dental checkups take less time, and it's fun to watch this system work! Most patients are amazed.
